What to Eat in Tenerife: A Local’s Guide to Canarian Classics

Tenerife is more than beaches and volcanoes — it’s a foodie paradise rooted in tradition, fresh produce, and simple flavours that let the ingredients shine. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or settling in for the season, here’s what you should definitely be ordering.

🥔

Papas Arrugadas with Mojo

Small wrinkly potatoes boiled in sea-salted water until tender, then served with mojo rojo (spicy red pepper sauce) or mojo verde (coriander and garlic). They’re everywhere — and they’re excellent.

🐟

Grilled Vieja

The vieja (parrotfish) is a local favourite. Mild, flaky, and often grilled whole with a squeeze of lemon. Pair it with local white wine and you’re set.

🍲

Ropa Vieja

Literally translating to “old clothes,” this shredded meat stew (often beef or chicken) is mixed with chickpeas, vegetables, and spices. It’s the kind of dish that tastes like Sunday at your abuela’s house.

🧄

Gofio Escaldado

A unique Canarian side dish made with gofio (toasted maize flour), fish stock, garlic, and herbs — whipped into a soft, porridge-like texture. Usually served with onions to dip.

🍮

Bienmesabe

An almond-based dessert that’s creamy, sweet, and perfect with ice cream. Made with egg yolks, sugar, almonds, lemon, and cinnamon. The name says it all: “It tastes good to me.”

☕

Barraquito

A layered coffee drink that’s part espresso, part condensed milk, part Licor 43, and part Tenerife magic. Served with a cinnamon stick and lemon zest — it’s basically dessert in a glass.
